How Many Estimates Should I Get?

Being a consumer in modern times is a really beautiful thing. With a plethora of ever-growing resources including the internet, consumer reviews, and an active media, you have never before been so empowered when shopping around. And you likely know this quite well. When looking for a place to go for dinner, you likely look at these things. And you probably do the same for most other things, including medical care, hiring a mechanic, or finding a new dentist. Or if you don’t, you should.

But while shopping around is great, especially when looking for things like home services including siding installation or a window replacement, it can be hard to decide when you’ve gotten enough information. How many estimates should you get? How many contractors should you contact? At APCO, we’re big fans of good answers. So today we’re going to do our best to bring you just that!

How Many Estimates Should I Get?

No matter what service you’re looking for, the real answer is going to be pretty much the same. Generally speaking, most folks will tell you the “big number” is three. But honestly speaking, the best answer is enough.

You want a couple very important things when you’re looking for a service provider. You want:

  • Someone certified. No room to bargain here. If your contractor isn’t certified, they shouldn’t be your contractor.
  • Someone knowledgeable. Businesses that display clear mastery of their trade are a must. Furthermore, they should make that knowledge readily available to you. A real pro can filter out the jargon and give it to you straight, making services simple and clear to understand without “fluffing” and leaving you confused. Folks who have met a salesman mechanic know what we’re talking about.
  • Someone you can trust. You need your professional to be totally trustworthy. Someone who has a history of excellent service, good reviews, and an excellent record for getting things done right, and done right the first time.
  • Someone you feel comfortable with. When you find a good contractor, the odds are good that you’ll be contacting them again. If your calling or meeting with someone for the first time, gauge how easy they are to communicate with. If it’s smooth sailing, you’re probably in good hands.

So, you can kind of see how enough is the best summary here. Sometimes that three number is pretty good, since odds are you’re going to click with someone within that span. But if you find perfect professionals on two, go for it. Or if you can’t find anyone you like or trust on three, go for four, or five. That is your privilege, and as a consumer, it’s your right, too.
