Reasons for Overflowing Gutters (& the Damage It Causes!)

Gutters are a pretty awesome—and understated—part of your home’s ability to protect itself. When working properly, they guard your home and foundation against water damage, preserve plants and soil near to the home, and help keep your roof working as it should. It’s because of all of these important aspects that gutter damage or a malfunctioning gutter can pose a really serious risk to your Columbus area home.

At APCO, our team is always dedicated to providing you with the tools and knowledge to keep your home secure, safe, and as beautiful as the day it was completed. Sometimes we do this with our comprehensive gutter services and home care. But sometimes we do this simply by sharing important information, too. Having trouble with overflowing gutters? We can help!

Overflowing Gutters: Common Causes

As you might expect, there are a few potential causes for this issue. We’ll start with the most common and work our way down to the oddball or offshoot causes.

  • Clogs and blockage. By most common, what we really mean is close to half or more gutter problems relate to clogging. Plant matter, roof debris, and a collection of mold, dust, and grime can all cause a clog. And a lot of the time it winds up being a combination of a few of these! To reduce the risks of blocks and clogs, it’s a good idea to look into gutter guards, as they can provide a solid measure of defense against the problem. But in the end, nothing beats routine maintenance. Your gutters should be checked and cleared as necessary quite frequently to avoid clogs—monthly would be ideal.
  • Damage to the gutters. Holes and cracks tend to crop up on older gutters, but even brand new gutters can take some damage from severe storms or debris from nearby trees. Rust is also a common factor because once it starts, it begins to spread, eventually rendering gutters useless. These reasons strengthen the case for routinely checking your gutters!
  • Poorly or incorrectly installed gutters. Maybe it was a first time DIY job or maybe you had the misfortune of working with some less-than-expert experts. Either way, a poor installation can lead to leaky or overflowing gutters in a hurry. This is most commonly caused by the gutters installed so that water tilts away from the drain pipe or possibly if the joints were mishandled. This is a fairly uncommon problem to have, but if you don’t find your solution in a clog, it might be a good idea to contact some professionals for proper installation services!
